Mr. Wesley Davis Atkins

Wesley Davis Atkins, 89, went home to be with Jesus Friday morning, November 30, 2012 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

A 2:00 p.m. Funeral service will be held Tuesday, December 4, 2012 at Stoneville Pentecostal Holiness Church. Interment will follow at Mayodan Municipal Cemetery.

A Surry County native, Wesley was born January 1, 1923, the son of Howard Marvin Atkins and Bertha Bullins Atkins. At an early age, his family moved to Mayodan, where he graduated from Elliot Duncan High School. He was a member of Stoneville Pentecostal Holiness Church where he served as a deacon, taught Sunday school, sang in the choir and with the church quartet. Wesley served as the Commander of the first Royal Ranger Troop at the Church. He was a World War II veteran, serving in North Africa, Algiers and Casablanca. He retired from Sprint Telephone with over 31 years of service.

Wesley loved to sing gospel music. He was the bass singer for The Friendly Five Quartet, The Mayo Gospel Four and The Lifeliners Quartet.

In addition to his parents, Wesley was preceded in death by his son, Marvin Chalmers Atkins; two sisters, Alpha Atkins Bullins and Alma Vaughn Kallam.

Wesley is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Mary Atkins of the home; two children, Wesley F. Atkins and wife, Ruth of Eden and Emily Atkins Dalton and husband, Joe of Mayodan; brother, Rev. Dr. Leonard Atkins and wife, Linda of Asheboro; nine grandchildren, Alex Atkins, Babbette Fontaine, Anthony Dalton, Kenette Tyson, Brian Atkins, Jason Dalton, Vicky Atkins, Martey Atkins, Wesley Eugene Atkins, Misty and Brian Carter; 12 great-grandchildren, a great number of nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. Monday, December 3, 2012 at Stoneville Pentecostal Holiness Church and other times at his daughter’s home, 616 North 3rd Avenue in Mayodan. Online condolences may be sent to www.rayfuneralhome.com.
